From the Garage, With Love

There’s something inherently pure about rock music that was born and bred from a garage. The raw energy it produces has the ability to be timeless.
Most particularly in the sense of how it advocates, initiates, and upholds every tenet of civil disobedience. The old saying goes, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” well… punk is in the ear of the listener with Hathaway’s debut short play: DEMO.

Acting as both an “unofficial” title of this premiere mixtape and a direct indicator of what it quite literally is (a demo), it provides a fresh, novel take on a notably unpolished genre. Opening with a hearty zest on “Quickstart”. You will notice the tone is set very well and with haste. The demo soldiers forward with songs that range from fun and silly to being an early definition of nostalgia. Seems strange to associate such young musicians with a sentimental longing and wistful affection for the past, but nostalgia isn’t necessarily age restrictive. Nor sound restrictive.
Music and memories are as synonymous with each other as pizza and crust. Even the grungiest looking pizza parlors often have some of the best pie you’ll ever encounter. I would say Hathaway’s sound in relation to their overall aesthetic totally follows suit with this. They aren’t grimy, unhinged kids with nothing to lose, they are flowering musicians with the pluck and passion to truly prove what they have to offer.
On a technical level, you can tell this first suite of tunes was produced and recorded with the Midwest’s fabled DIY approach. In a pungent swing of musicality, Hathaway has been voraciously putting together and hopping on shows to ignite intrigue amongst the Indianapolis music scene. Gathering a massive amount of attention in a mere five months after releasing this demo, certifies just how alive Indiana’s DIY spirit still is and will forever be.
Now, we’ve yet to reach the end of this encounter! I’ve talked up their debut DEMO enough, it’s time we hear from this epic Garage Rock group themselves. It is with vibrant joy that I present my exclusive interview with: Hathaway, the band taking the Indy music scene by storm!

MBM: Can you tell our readers more about the inception and inspiration behind Hathaway?
HATH: Elijah wanted to start a band in middle school, and when high school came around, Jerry and Elijah started playing music together. We first started out by playing basically whatever we wanted until we found our sound. We went through many name changes and practice locations until we came up with the name Hathaway, which is the name of the street we practiced on.
MBM: What’s something you’ve learned about yourselves as individuals and as a band through the creative process of making this demo?
HATH: Recording and making music is very easy. Anyone can do it!
MBM: What unique instruments would you consider using in any future songs/releases?
HATH: Mandolin, Banjo, or maybe a lute for some medieval jams. MBM: Where do you see your music taking you with where you stand now?
MBM: Where do you see your music taking you with where you stand now?
HATH: Nowhere but up.
MBM: If you could give any advice or inspiration to your contemporaries, what would you say?
HATH: Release music. A lot of bands we go see are usually cover bands or bands with one song they released a while ago. It’s good to have proper music out somewhere so people can spread the word.

With a mentality and fire like that, how can you stop Hathaway? You can’t, and you shouldn’t because these cats understand what they’re doing.
They’re also not shying away from that advice they’ve given. Not only do they have a great slate of shows picking up as summertime only approaches, they also have a debut EP coming out soon! Titled: WHAT’S IT TO YOU? and the tour they’re currently on is in support of this project.
In good taste, amid a scene that thrives off of genuine character and true grit, Hathaway is among good company. Their willingness to give the music their all and get themselves mobile with it proves that their trajectory is aimed well and high. Do check out their tunes and socials, I can’t say you’ll be disappointed! Until next time…stay moved, people!
