With a body-busting blend of all the best elements of early-mid 2000s ‘core music, 90s nu-metal, and the kind of instrumentation that is designed to get people’s attention…
Raleigh, North Carolina’s HEIRLOOM takes making music to their own robust level!
Thus far, I’ve only been cycling their discog and watching live performances on YouTube. SO wishing I could just helicopter down through the screen and join the middle of the crowd as thrash dancing swirls and the headbanging abounds. I’m sure the energy radiating from the screen is but a sheer ripple of how it feels to be at their live shows (I’m very much hoping to get to one SOON!). When I discovered their page back in July of this year (2022) I said to myself, “this seems like one of those bands that just…has it.” It being great music.
Boy was I in for a treat, and so are you! It is with utmost honor and absolute happiness that I present the Moved (aka anyone who is a Moved By Music supporter/reader) my virtual sit down with one of Carolina’s finest metalcore acts… HEIRLOOM! Many thanks to you gnarly terrestrials for joining us!
MBM: What aspect(s) of your music would you say you enjoy the most?
HRLM: We enjoy the fact that all four of us have a variety of influences to pull from, so we are able to be as creative as possible. My (Nolan) personal favorite aspect is that our songs can reach fans of many different types of music. We never just want to appeal to the “metal” fans or put a ceiling on what we can do career-wise. Our live shows have an unmatched energy.
MBM: Is there an integral story behind your band’s formation? How did you all become sound shapers together?
HRLM: 3 out of 4 of us have been playing music together since high school. Nolan (vocalist of HEIRLOOM) had been in and out of local bands for 10+ years. Nikki, Austin & Kevin have been together for 5 years, but kept having vocalists dip out on showing up to their practices, so eventually when Nolan was looking for another band, the timing worked out perfectly.
MBM: Are there any other forms of art that you feel help with evoking your musicianship?
HRLM: Our guitarist, Kevin, has an immersive background in photography and graphics. His creative vision helps align our music with beautiful visuals! Without him in our group - our artwork, merch designs, and overall aesthetic would not be near as spot on as it is.
MBM: If you could play any specific towns/cities, states, or venues…name 3 you would go for without hesitation! HRLM: Melbourne, Australia has been on the bucket list since we started the band, especially since a few folks thought we were an Aussie band when we debuted (and some still do haha) - The other 2 would be Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA and Europe as a whole! We’ve been asked to come to Germany a few times, so that will be a great time.
MBM: The Furthest Corners is absolutely smashing back to front…but is there anything new from Heirloom coming our way soon? (talk about as much as you can/want to!)
HRLM: Thank you very much! We are very proud of The Furthest Corners. But YES! We just dropped a new single called “WE ARE NOT THE SAME” produced by legendary producer HOWARD BENSON as well as NEIL SANDERSON of THREE DAYS GRACE, on their label JUDGE & JURY RECORDS. We have a ton of new music on the way! For now, go stream the hell out of the new song! Thank you so much for having us.
HEIRLOOM doesn’t simply create a soundscape but a sound space.
Something that invites people in to welcome them. Feel with them. Quite literally yell to the heavens with them. Their music is “heavy” on the surface but once you boil down the structure of their sound and listen to it, not just for the entertainment it provides, but for the sheer musicianship and transparency it holds… you won’t just find more of an appreciation for them as people, but for yourself as a person.
Should it strike your fancy (because it totally should!), you can find HEIRLOOM’s music wherever you can listen to it. Spotify, YouTube, Apple, even motherf***in’ bandcamp! While you’re at it, don’t forget to be the 21st century hooligan you are and also follow them on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with their adventures!
Wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever you do…listen to HEIRLOOM!
