I believe people meet people because they are meant to, not simply because of chance.
Some may scoff, some may say yay, others will just keep reading because they want to…so here’s the scoop! One of the prime attributes I’ve come to enjoy about Greenville (its music scene in particular), is that you often meet some interesting, super kind, and pretty darn genuine folks.
When I was first introduced to Lo, I was at a networking event for Rham Academy (a nonprofit community art academy here in the GVL). He was there, not just to network, but to perform. Sharing a stage with two other significant up-and-coming hip-hoppers ($aucelina and WVN).
I was thoroughly impressed with each artist’s gumption in taking the stage to represent themselves and their craft. All three were proper, professional, and all-around wonderful to meet. I could certainly devote an entire post to each of them (👀) but the feature to follow hosts your backroads country gentleman himself, GRANDADDY LO!
MBM: Lo Lo Loooo! I am so happy this has finally come to; I s’pose we can start with our usual. When did you first realize you were so moved by music?
GDLO: I’ve been moved by music my whole life, to be honest. I can remember certain parts of my life by songs that were out at that time. Rather, I was a big head-little neck kid listening to “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston or a pre-teen jamming to OutKast at my great grandfather’s birthday party. Music is one of the top three reasons I’m alive today. Not to mention just being an artist these days, writing out my own thoughts and giving them to the world.
MBM: How many years have you been working on music, and what has been your favorite project/event so far? GDLO: I have been working on/writing music since I was 8 years old. Writing little rhymes and keeping them for myself or giving them to girls that I liked in school. I’m now approaching 5 years of making music in a professional manner, so I’m still young in the game. I honestly don’t have a favorite project because every song I’ve written is a part of who I am.
Fun Fact: I wrote my first album “TAX SEASON” while I was on deployment in Iraq. The initial version was recorded in Garage Band on an iPhone 6. I would scramble around after duty to find an empty tent or hut to release my flow. I would even be interrupted by helicopters and jets that would mess up a perfect take.
My favorite event would be the N2Deep Trail Ride of 2021. I had just completed my song “BACKROADS BOOGIE” and I was eager to perform it. I reached out to one of the original members of the N2Deep Saddle Club named Alex Brooks and he gave me a chance. I ended up performing in front of a few thousand people. My life hasn’t been the same since then!
MBM: I know your vlog has been up n’ goin’ for a minute now, can you tell us more about that experience?
GDLO: My Vlog “The Lo Show” has been a roller coaster of an experience. It’s really me self documenting my life from a first person point of view. Have you ever watched a biopic where hella people tell the story of another person’s life? Or someone else is in control of the camera? Well nah, that’s not how I want my story to be told. I know that one day I’m going die so I want to leave a living message behind for my children and everyone else to see. You see my high’s, low’s and everything in between. I get to show off everyone that I come in contact with while I’m on this come up from local Independent artist to a global musical sensation!!!!!!! SO SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW 👀😡🤠
MBM: Do you have any pre-show rituals or hype songs? GDLO: Now this is a good question here. Before I grab the mic I have to go somewhere alone, dive in my own thoughts while breathing deep and stretching. This allows for me to tap into raw GRANDADDY energy and channel all negative thoughts away. Normally, my sister joins me from the spirit realm and lets me know that “I’m the shit and no one can stop me but me” (her words not mine). THEN IT’S TIME TO DELIVER SUPREME ENERGY!
MBM: If you could have a down-home hootenanny on Mars (yep, the Red Planet itself), what would your setlist be? Additionally, who else would you have on the bill (stay in the region, go national, both, anybody!)
GDLO: My setlist would be: KOUNTRY BOY, I GOT, LOST IN TIME, VENTING, HOOK 4 WHAT, then transition over to WAY TO LONG, UHH HUH (the single version), 3GBW then DOWN BAD before ending it out with RIDE, BACKROADS BOOGIE and COUNTRY GIRL TWERK.
I’d like for Ty Graves, Derty Dotz, K National, and my guy Elevator Jay to be the regional artists on the bill. I can’t forget to have the smoothest, the coldest, and the boldest $aucelina setting ish off for the ladies.
MBM: Can you tell the Moved more about what the rest of this year looks like for you? GDLO: My plan is to release a single every month with a music video following each song. My main focus is growing and expanding my fan base by doing more purposeful live shows. I’ll be focused more on GREENVILLE, SC as well. I’ve been on the road a lot but it’s time to become a staple in the city that I grew up in. So you can find me networking and building until I have enough local backing to bring together a sold out show of my own!! To sum it all up, the rest of the year looks like a whole lot of hustling and growth.
Heart. Humor. Humanity. These are the qualities that shine throughout Lo’s music, performances, and his overall aura. To loosely quote some Andy Mineo lyrics, Grandaddy Lo is not simply a vibe…he is an experience. Like onions, cakes, Shrek, and many other facets of life, Lo has a multitude of layers; and I cannot appreciate him enough for stopping by to peel some back!
If you see or meet Grandaddy Lo, just know that it won’t be for no reason. Until then, keep up with him on Instagram, YouTube, and anywhere else you can get…the Lo down! (Alright, enough tee-hee’s). Be sure to keep this backroads country gentlemen on your feeds and in yer ears.
Many thanks to Lo, again, for comin’ through. 'Til next time, everyone! Stay moved!
