It could be my personal bias, but there’s just something about modern Midwest hardcore. It’s not afraid to grit its feet into the ground, or bounce the roof off the place. Not that hardcore music elsewhere in the nation (or globe) doesn’t live up to that particular kind of hype...there’s just something about Midwest hardcore. Especially in terms of its evolution from whence it came. You’ve got your core-cracklin’ OGs like Zero Boys (IN), Negative Approach (MI), & Husker Du (IA)...pushing forward to bands today like Short Leash (MI), LUCA (IL), & the newly formed Use of Force (IN).
U.O.F. culminates the efforts of Justin Loubert (guitar), James Gilchriest (bass), Willy Brown (vocals), & Dexter Shelburne (drums). Fellas who are no strangers to the heavy music scene in Indiana. Centerting themselves in Fort Wayne, this quartet pulls out every stop you could think to look for in expressive hardcore.
The lyrics are angry & the music is just as powerful. Any breaks you hear in-between tracks is only slight & beckons that continuous locomotive nature that all good hardcore music possesses. It drums up a Pink Floydian “Wall'' effect, which can have you listening to this seven song sizzler back-to-back withoutta sweat. Unless of course you’re flailing around in-place, practice moshing for when shows come back into full-swing.
In the meantime, if you’re into that sorta thing, absolutely check out U.O.F. & what they have to offer. They subtract the BS & multiply what it means to stand up for what you believe. The fed-up nature of the lyrics paired with such nitty-gritty guitars, blasting drums, & straight in yo’ face vocalization produce a listening experience that will leave your head spinning in the best kind of way. No matter how long they plan on stickin’ around, they’ve certainly blared into the scene with one helluva bombastic debut. You can find links to their music & socials below!
Keep the music alive, y’all! Here’s to the next post!
