It’s incredible. The ppl I know truly blow my mind.
I could exhaust y’all with plenty of iterations about folks that I’ve met who harbor an artistry that is unrivaled. Not because of my bias in knowing them, but more explicitly because of their very own work ethic. I’ve seen ppl I don’t know bust their booties to generate a quality repository of work and that alone can be impressive enough…but seeing ppl you personally know follow their dreams and hammer away at producing a body of work that they’re proud of is not simply heartwarming.
It is the purest, most immediate form of inspiration.
One such individual currently resides in the Windy City and is cooking up an exhilarating storm of the gnarliest electronic music I’ve heard in years. Under the stage name pplsppl (pronounced accordingly), Emily King operates on a frequency that is truly her own. She has recently produced quite the influx of attention throughout the Electronic scene in Chicago, which was only a matter of time. It is an utmost honor and pleasure to have spun this piece in collaboration with a consistently cool old band/schoolmate. Though this merely be the surface, here is MBM’s virtual sit down with:
MBM: When did you first get into electronic/dance music, and when did you first start experimenting with your sound?
pplsppl: I first got into Electronic music when I was working a night shift summer job & I came across Joyryde’s song “I WARE HOUSE” and probably listened to that on repeat for a good two weeks. Shortly after I discovered AC Slater and I don’t think I’ve gone a day since where I haven’t listened to something in the EDM realm. I really didn’t start to get into DJing until the Pandemic hit - I moved to Chicago 5 days before lockdown and turned to music to keep me company. I started getting DJ lessons from White Owl, and he really just fueled my passion even more. Once I got the hang of DJing more, I started having all these ideas for different songs so decided to take a shot at producing. I’m still fairly fresh into production, so I’m still learning my sound but I’ve really found that I prioritize baselines over everything.
MBM: Which is more satisfying to you: mashups/remixes or producing original tracks?
pplsppl: I would say DJing is where my heart is at - it gives the opportunity for you to enjoy the music with others and really get lost in the moment. I find that to be the most rewarding part of it all.
MBM: Whether local, regional, national, or international, build a small festival lineup if you were to be the headliner.
pplsppl: If I were to be able to build my dream lineup it would include AC Slater, Sage Armstrong, Walker & Royce, Kyle Watson, and VNSSA. All absolute legends.
MBM: Last but not least… are you working on anything currently that you’d like to tell the ppl about?
pplsppl: I’ve started a house focused EP I’m hoping to release by the end of the year. It’s heavily inspired by Night Bass and is really aimed at capturing all of the elements that made me fall in love with the scene.
It certainly seems as though the scene is returning that love! With a deep passion and respect for the sound she’s chosen to both cultivate and learn from, pplsppl is amassing a backlog of extended mixes and original tracks that have one ultimate objective: to bring ppl together through groove! Incorporating elements from dance, techno-house, and drum/bass, with sprinkles of dubstep, nu-wave and electro-synth…pplsppl isn’t just another garden-variety disc-jockey with a touch of sheer luck...
She is a notably devoted beat-weaver who is only just getting started.
Check out pplsppl on SoundCloud, Spotify, YouTube, or anywhere you might have a chance to discover her tunes further!
There you'll find something for everyone because this is music by the ppl, for the ppl.
